Flat out love by jessica park5/13/2023 ![]() To Julie, the emotionally scrambled members of the Watkins family add up to something that … well… doesn’t quite add up. ![]() Before long, through late-night exchanges of disembodied text, he begins to stir something tender and silly and maybe even a little bit sexy in Julie’s suddenly lonesome soul. ![]() That’s because Finn is traveling the world and surfacing only for random Facebook chats, e-mails, and status updates. The youngest, Celeste, is a frighteningly bright but freakishly fastidious 13-year-old who hauls around a life-sized cardboard cutout of her oldest brother almost everywhere she goes.Īnd there’s that oldest brother, Finn: funny, gorgeous, smart, sensitive, almost emotionally available. The middle child, Matt, is an MIT tech geek with a sweet side… and the social skills of a spool of USB cable. The parents, Erin and Roger, are welcoming, but emotionally distant and academically driven to eccentric extremes. When Julie’s off-campus housing falls through, her mother’s old college roommate, Erin Watkins, invites her to move in. And Julie Seagle, college freshman, small-town Ohio transplant, and the newest resident of this Boston house, is determined to get to the bottom of it. Something is seriously off in the Watkins home. It’s not what you know-or when you see-that matters. Flat-Out Love is a warm and witty novel of family love and dysfunction, deep heartache and raw vulnerability, with a bit of mystery and one whopping, knock-you-to-your-knees romance. ![]()

Since Inhibitor Phase is one of the books I have on tap for Sci-Fi Month, I figured this would be the perfect time to feature some cover art, while at the same time introducing the universe in a bit more detail. There’ve also been a number of novellas and shorts set in the same universe, many of which have been collected within the two omnibus editions found below. Seven full-length novels have been published to date, of these there have been one standalone (Chasm City), two in the Dreyfus Emergencies, and then four in the Inhibitor Sequence-the most recent being Inhibitor Phase, released just this year. ![]() Here is my spoiler free review and recommendation of this epic. While Alastair Reynolds pens each book as its own complete adventure, the overarching plot is set on a scale much grander, so that it doesn’t take much digging in to the series to realize that there’s more going on than what meets the eye. Revelation Space by Alastair Reynolds is a hard science fiction novel and the first book in an epic science fiction series. While I’ve read remarkably few of this series, even I can’t deny the effect that it’s had on recent science fiction and space opera. One of the hallmarks of modern space opera, Revelation Space has been around for nearly twenty years, having first been published in 2002. ![]() Her Wicked Marquess by Stacy Reid5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() She anonymously claims that the bedchamber belonged to none other than Miss FitzWilliam, tarnishing her own reputation?and chances of the dastardly union her family secured for her. Although this series is a fantasy romance, the romance was not strong in the first book. ![]() Ruby Red is the first book in the series, and I give it a full five star review. I’m a bit jealous because it’s been turned into a television show in Germany, and I would definitely watch it if it were in English. The author is from Germany, and this series has been translated into many languages. It’s a hard subject to write about, and I applaud Kerstin Gier for how well it was done. After getting to the end, I thought over the entire story and did not really find any time traveling mistakes. Although I usually don’t like to read or watch anything having to do with time travel because I almost always find a mistake in the plot, this one was different. This series is based in London and is about a sixteen-year-old girl named Gwen. ![]() My daughter read the first book in the series, and then she continuously told me I should read it. I was curious to see what kind of story had captivated her attention so I took her recommendation and dived in. I will admit to reading this trilogy in less than a week, and I highly recommend it to both adults and teens. ![]() The truth strauss5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() I’m aware that I’m supposed to scorn The Game, but in fact I loved it. “She was probably the sanest person in the house,” Strauss writes. ![]() ![]() It culminates with Strauss and a troupe of other full-time seducers moving into “Project Hollywood,” a rented mansion just off the Sunset Strip-the former residence of Dean Martin-where they attract scores of disciples, lead dating workshops, and eventually turn on each other like crabs in a bucket, but not before Courtney Love crashes in a commandeered bedroom for a few months. Published in 2005, The Game recounts a two-year period during which Strauss, an entertainment journalist for the New York Times and Rolling Stone, hung out with and absorbed the strategies of the pickup artist, or PUA, subculture, men who have transformed the delicate dance of flirtation into a kind of step-by-step recipe. It looks like a combination of Bible and diary, which matches its contents: one part rules to live by, one part gut-spilling. The only edition of Neil Strauss’ The Game: Penetrating the Secret Society of Pickup Artists available at my local bookstore comes bound in gold-embossed faux leather with gilded page edges and a satiny red ribbon to mark your place. ![]() 12 rules beyond order5/13/2023 ![]() ![]() His book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, published in 2018, sold millions of copies, and he had conducted a 160-city speaking tour, drawing crowds of up to 3,000 a night premium tickets included the chance to be photographed with him. When the story of his detox became public, in February 2020, it provided an answer to a mystery: Whatever happened to Jordan Peterson? In the three years before he disappeared from view in the summer of 2019, this formerly obscure psychology professor’s name had been a constant presence in op-ed columns, internet forums, and culture-war arguments. The coma kept him unconscious as his body went through the terrible effects of withdrawal he awoke strapped to the bed, having tried to rip out the catheters in his arms and leave the intensive-care unit. The Canadian academic, then 57, had been placed in a nine-day coma by doctors in a Russian clinic, after becoming addicted to benzodiazepines, a class of drug that includes Xanax and Valium. ![]() This article was published online on March 2, 2021. Running away from my abusive parents to start a new, improved, fabulous queer life in gay Montreal wasn’t supposed to be like this. There, ensconced in the darkness of my tiny, filthy dorm room, I lay in bed like a wilting plant, while all around me, rich white trust funders frolicked like a real-life Abercrombie and Fitch ad. It got one star one RT because the special effects were still excellent. Revenge of the Fallen, in my opinion, has been one of the worst movies I've ever seen in an actual movie theater. 2009 marked the release of the second film in the franchise, Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. But, yes, for all intents and purposes, I enjoyed the original movie at the time. With that said and, now, four sequels later (three of which I've seen), I don't know if I could go back and say that the original was a good movie, if I were to watch it again. So, in a way, you could say it stood out and, again, at the time, it was an entertaining movie. Summer blockbusters have always been about casual, popcorn entertainment, but I do think that there weren't many movies, at the time, like the original Transformers. But that was still before we were bombarded, figuratively and literally, by these movies. ![]() I'll be honest, I thought the first movie (at the time) was solid popcorn entertainment. It should be obvious, to the one person who probably follows my reviews on RottenTomatoes (since I haven't reviewed a film in this franchise on Letterboxd yet), that I've never been a big fan of the Transformers franchise. ![]() |
